The Lake Michigan Solo Scramble features two starts, one from Racine, WI to accommodate skippers living on the western fringes of Lake Michigan and a concurrent start from Holland, MI for those on the "right-coast" of the lake. Both fleets proceed to the southern mid-lake NOAA weather buoy 45007, and thence to a single finish at Michigan City, IN. This event is quite popular in that there are no real lengthy deliveries required to participate in it for most skippers, and it also provides new solo skippers with a very realistic sense of a Solo Mac Challenge. It is an overnight race, with a Friday afternoon start, and at 110 miles is long enough to use as a solo qualifier for a future Solo Mac Challenge (as long as the total time involved to complete it exceeds 24 hours, under sail). On Saturday afternoon, and extending into the evening hours, there is an Awards BBQ at the Michigan City Yacht Club featuring brats, burgers, and the like. The festivities close with what has become a tradition of the event - opening a bottle of Scotland's finest, tossing away the cork, and passing it around as a toast to our sailing buddies who are no longer with us. For Lake Michigan solo skippers, this is a fine way to wrap up a racing season - we invite you to join us for the next Solo Scramble! 2007 Lake Michigan Solo Scramble Notice of Race and Required Equipment List |
