2000 Mackinac Solo
Report
The 22nd running of the Port Huron to Mackinac Island and the 4th start of the Chicago to Mackinac Island solo challenge saw 20 entrants on Lake Huron and 13 on Lake Michigan.
Although the overall numbers were slightly down, having 7 new competitors earn membership in the Society is certainly the success we were hoping for.
This years race saw mostly light to medium air on both lakes with a couple of heavier air bursts to keep the usual hoard of flys at bay.
Monday morning race committee saw Kevin Hogan on Kintaro followed by first timer Chuck Storm on Trim finish on the Island (smart sailing and the wind gods were with these two)
as the next finishers didn't smell the Island until later Monday evening. Al Merrithew, Harold Beaton and Dick Lappin took first place in their divisions finishing under 65 hours.
Lake Michigan entrants got their money's worth with lighter fickle winds. First to the Island was Dave Rearick on Geronimo in 68 hours followed by first timer Joe Turns on
CatNap and Lake Michigan veteran Jim McLaren, all taking firsts in their respective divisions.
By Tuesday morning all competitors were moored in Mackinac Island sporting Bacardi ball caps and a bottle of Bacardi's finest 8 year old rum in their lockers. Boat lies and the
previous 3 days of sailing were the talk of the dock as everyone looked forward to another Festive party hosted by Norm and Carol Bauman Tuesday evening.
The awards luncheon was hosted by Chris and his staff at the MIYC. As usual the atmosphere and fare was superb. Congratulations were given to new members Tony Driza, Joe Turns,
Cal Karr, Chuck Storm, Wally McMinn, Adrian VandenHoven and Mike Mahar WELCOME TO THE GLSS. The President's Challenge Cup was awarded to Chuck Storm from Lake Huron and Joe Turns from Lake Michigan. Al
Merrithew was honored, and awarded the Peter Fisher Memorial Trophy. To those who met the challenge and reached the Island solo CONGRATULATIONS
Each year this race is run I'm always amazed with the hard work and efforts of the many volunteers who give to the GLSS, to all those who gave their time I thank you. To the
many sponsors and donors the GLSS thanks you.
