Highlights for 2009 The Course The Challenge Running between two Lake Superior cities with a rich history of maritime activity, the Sault Ste. Marie to Duluth Solo Challenge is a true gem of freshwater racing. For starters, it's the second longest freshwater race in the world that is not held annually. Duluth is a wonderful finishing city, with great restaurants and attractions to visit during your stay. The Trans Superior Solo Challenge is really a race within a race. The GLSS sanctions a singlehanded division within the crewed Trans Superior Race which is managed by the TSIRC. Participants who wish to enter the singlehanded division of the Challenge are required to pay two entry fees to participate in this event: first, payable to the TSRC in the amount of $275 ($255 for US SAILING members), and secondly payable to the GLSS, in the amount of $85. Both of these checks are to be submitted to the address shown on the Entry Form. An additional medallion may be ordered if desired. Flags are awarded by the TSRC; commemorative medallions are awarded to successful finishers by the GLSS. Most importantly, successful finishers in the Singlehanded Division who are not yet members of the GLSS are awarded lifetime membership in the Society, and those who are members will have their finish recognized by the Society. All skippers who wish to participate in the Singlehanded Division must submit all required GLSS documents and entry fees (TSRC and GLSS) to the GLSS. You do not need to complete any form on the crewed Trans Superior website for entry in the Singlehanded Division. Non-member skippers must complete a solo passage of at least 100 statute miles, taking at least 24 hours under sail to complete. This must be documented on the Solo Passage Documentation Form, which along with a Sailing Resumé will be the basis for an independant review by the GLSS Board of Directors before being accepted into this Challenge. The Algoma Sailing Club has articles for sale prior to the start of the Challenge in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and include such items (usually) as sweatshirts, and polo shirts. They are also heavily involved with the pre-race festivities in the Soo. The Duluth Yacht Club, along with the TSRC and the LSYA manage the finish line activities, as well as the BBQ, Social, and Awards Dinner held on the following Thursday after the start of the race. Additionally, the DYC will have apparel for purchase on-line, and at the finish. Changes for 2009
