FROM THE NAV STATION
======================

Ok...You had better save this one. You are receiving Volume 1, Number 1 of The GLSS RODE SHOW. Trust me... This edition will certainly be worth a fortune on e-Bay in the near future. After all, what would be the value of an entire set if you happened to be missing the first one?? Read on, mates...

The purpose of the GLSS RODE SHOW is to get timely information posted to members and friends of the Great Lakes Singlehanded Society. The "cost" of being both fast and accurate will be its informal nature. At this point in time, I have no idea how often this will come out! One thing for sure, it is likely to be full of typo's! Please forgive me when my head is trying to say one thing, and my keyboard says another.

So, you may ask, "Why call this 'The RODE SHOW'?" Actually, our President, Wayne Gould, sort of named it. You will note that Wayne's 'tag line' is "When in danger, or in doubt, go below and think things out." Out of respect to el-Presidente, I was trying to come up with an appropriate name for this rag. You guessed it -- I couldn't get that creative. (The 'Bilge Board" just didn't have GLSS class.) Therefore, I have re-named the tag line: "When in danger, or in doubt, drop the hook and think things out."
Ahhh... You guessed it: The GLSS RODE SHOW. (All of a sudden, having Vol-1, No-1 in your hands has a value in itself.)

So... Now you (appropriately) ask: What's going to be in this RODE SHOW? First of all, you will have to tolerate a line of baloney from yours truly. Next, you can expect to see important upcoming dates; For example, the GLSS Spring Open House on March 28 at NSSC. And... You can expect to see important stuff, like the "From The Pointy End" -- see below. And, you can expect to see chat or correspondence that I receive from you -- appropriately edited, of course.

So... Here are a couple of rules... If anyone uses this distribution list to solicit commercial stuff for sale, you are dropped from the list. Sorry.

The RODE SHOW will be sent to GLSS "members and friends". If you send me an e-mail name & address, they will be on the list! And most importantly, if you get this, and don't want it, please let me know and I'll drop you from this listing with my apology. Click to send Pat an email.

And here's one final comment: The RODE SHOW is an informal newsletter of the GLSS. Our official newsletter will continue to be the SOLO CHALLENGER which will be published to members three times per year -- April, August & January.

FROM THE POINTY END
=====================

As the true millennium began in 2001, so too the Great Lakes Singlehanded Society is moving into the new millennium. Every GLSS President's first message has summarized the coming events of the year with glowing enthusiasm and optimism. I certainly will not deviate from that fine tradition. We are a closely-knit society whose members count many among them as their closest friends.

Once again I'm encouraged to be serving with Board Officers and Directors who are dedicated, enthusiastic and very capable. Tom Munson has graciously accepted the responsibility of Vice-President and Race Chairman for 2001. Tom is well known for his charismatic work in our annual Open House scheduled this year on March 28 at Northstar Sail Club. I will sleep easily knowing that Tom's steady hand is on the helm of your solo sailing program this year. Bob Van Eck will be logging all the GLSS administrative details as Recording Secretary, while Jack Whyatt will continue to guard the ship's purse as Treasurer. Patrick Nugent has signed on again as Corresponding Secretary and Newsletter Editor, and accepted the additional responsibility of E-Mail Secretary. Your afterguard concludes with Directors, Mark Gutteridge, Jim McLaren, Robert Robins, Tari Smith, Dave Rearick, Michael Garcia and Wally McMinn. --Wayne Gould, GLSS President
