FROM THE NAV STATION
======================

Here we go with the second edition to the RODE SHOW. And whatever you do, don't use this to set the trend! Just because the second edition came out a week after the first edition, doesn't automatically mean that this has turned into a weekly newsletter!! It just so happens that there is news, and I've got the time. Wait... I don't have the time -- I'm just doing it anyway!

Here's the news: Our annual Open House is coming up in a couple of weeks. If you were at last year's session, you will remember that we had a full house. The evening is quite informal. It is a good time to bring a friend who has shown an interest in singlehanded sailing. It is casual, informal and informational. Everyone is invited. You don't need a GLSS escort!!
Just show up at NSSC at 7:00 on 3/28.

Wayne Gould is doing a great job as President. He has distributed a bound book to all of the board members explaining their office and their monthly duties. You read that correctly -- he gave each of us a BOUND BOOK!! Trust me, we are being led by Mr. Organization. Read on...

2001 AGM SUMMARY -- The 2001 Annual General Membership Meeting was held at Bayview Yacht Club on Janurary 20,2001. Following a lively social hour, Bill Dembek (President), called the meeting to order at 16:30 hours. The minutes from last years meeting were read by Bob VanEck. Jack Whyatt reported on the financial status of the Society with a year ending balance of $1876.00. Bill presented the slate of candidates to replace to outgoing Board members. The following candidates were unanimously approved by the members attending: Michael Garcia; Wally McMinn; Dave Rearick; Bob VanEck; Robert Robins. Bill then gave a re-cap of the 2000 events followed by brief reports from each of the Committee Chairmen. Bill presented Al Merrithew with a 10 year Plaque for his 10 successful Challenges. Jim Otton was honoured and awarded the Ralph Eilberg Award for his contribution and support to Phil Rubright during the 2000 Europe 1 Newman STAR Race. The Meeting adjourned at 18:00 hours. Following Bayview"s delicious buffet diner GLSS members Jim Otton, Ray Mason and Phil Rubright were introduced as guest speakers, each reporting on their adventures during the 2000 Europe 1 Newman STAR Race (Trans-Atlantic Solo Race). When Bayview's Bar was finally closed at 02:00 hours on the 21st of Janurary, the usual GLSS members were seen leaving another entertaining AGM.

FROM THE MAIL BAG
===================

From: Tony Driza --

Hi Pat, Acting on the not-so-subtle-request of one of the Lake Michigan co-dependant enablers (he actually promised to buy multiple rounds at the Island upon completion of this year's Mac), I have dredged up the gory details of last year's race, as I recollect them anyway. Panic, chaos, and disorder have been chronicled, and for those with a squeemish constitution, I have left out the parts where it really got bad... I've attached this as a word document, let me know if it doesn't come through, or if one of the other grand vizirs have already sent this to you.
Cheers,
Tony
Whoa Nellie

Ahoy, Tony! Your article is "first class". Thanks a lot. I am saving it to be printed in the "Solo Challenger" which will be coming out in April.
Stay tuned.

From: Al Merrithew --

Hey Nuge, It's funny that you should write and ask for an article. I was just sitting here, re-sailing some of the more memorable legs of the solo race. The subject of my thoughts was brought to mind by the windy days we have had recently. I am of the opinion that we often sail with too much sail. I remember one time...

Oh Albert!! This is a good one. I'm going to save yours for the "Solo Challenger" too. In fact, I'm going to laminate it, and tape it to my bulkhead so I can whip your a-- this year!!! Stay tuned.

Speaking of the Mail Bag, how about a few stats: This RODE SHOW is going out to 37 Members and 21 Friends of the GLSS. Not to shabby for the second edition, eh?

Ok everybody... We're going to do a scientific pole. It's easy... What kind of bottom paint do you use? Send me your answer. I'll let you know the tally in the next RODE SHOW.
