Solo Sailor Sunset

FROM THE NAV STATION
======================

Man it's been cold! I expect to wake up in the morning to see that the trees have started changing color! A friend of mine left this week for a fishing trip north of Wawa. When he called to confirm his reservations, the owner commented that there was still ice on the lake!! Man it's been cold!!

For those of you who have entered the Mac-Solo, watch your mailboxes this week! Acceptance letters have been prepared, and they are ready to go. Race books have been received from the printer - they will be sent to you, too. Also included in your acceptance packet are schedules, agenda and miscellaneous information for the Skippers' Meeting on June 14. You will have plenty of stuff to review! If you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

P.S. Do you still have to send in your application? Send it direct to me at:

Step # 4 - Go For a Solo Sail
=====================

Wow! Here's where the rubber hits the road (or the sheets hit the wind!)!!! Only four weeks to go, and it's time to practice. For those who are first-time entrants, schedule a block of time during this upcoming holiday weekend to get your qualifying solo under your belt. And if you are a seasoned veteran, for Pete's sake, go sailing this weekend!

Here are a couple of things you can check out when you're sailing. Do you have all the "stuff" on the boat? How about that snatch-block that had to be re-built last winter - is that back on board? How does the rig look? Is there too much slack on the leeward shrouds? Did the spinnaker get packed the last time you used it - or is it just stuffed in the turtle? If I ask you any more questions, we'll both become charter members of the OCD Club!!

Here's what I'm doing this weekend&ldots; Bay City Yacht Club sponsor's a race called the "Doublehanded Race Around the Bay in May". The race starts off with a breakfast buffet & skippers' meeting. The course is moderate in length - about 20 miles total. But it is a perfect distance. There are even a couple legs of 7-miles or so to give ample time for trimming and tuning. In past years, we've been back to the dock before 4:00 (with a bit of a sunburn) just in time for dinner and race results. One of the parts that I look forward to is that my DH Partner is fellow GLSS buddy Dick Lappin. We find that we're able to get around the racecourse AND solve some world problems!

Hey. Bottom line: Go sailing this coming holiday weekend!!

Respectfully,
Patrick Nugent
